My world was turned completely upside down when, at thirty-two years old, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, it was NOT to be the last time. The confusion and terror that followed, awakened a part of me that had been inattentive to the choices I was making in my life; particularly regarding the way I was eating and managing stress. Having cancer was a wake up call that transformed my life forever, and possibly saved it.
The first part of my journey of transformation was about food. My staple lunch through high school was a pack of chocolate chip cookies and a container of chocolate milk. Through college, I discovered a new challenge that I did not encounter in high school; trying to keep my eyes open mid day during class lectures, after burning a candle at both ends. Processed and refined sugary meals and snacks were my go to for as long as I can remember. I was a sugar connoisseur in the 80’s and was proud of it. In hindsight, my blood sugar levels were up and down like a roller coaster. I found it hard to concentrate and experienced digestive issues, constipation, inflammation and hives on a regular basis.
After my diagnosis, I realized that I needed to conquer my own sugar addiction. So I faced that challenge and also implemented other changes that healed my digestive and sleep issues and even cleared up my hives. I am continually amazed at how much better I feel now at 50, than I did in my 20’s and 30’s.
The second leg of my journey was to acknowledge the emotional component of my affliction and the major role that this played in my well-being. I soon made changes that had a huge impact on my life; physically, mentally and spiritually. I changed careers and became a Certified Personal Trainer. I also began researching information on nutrition, taking health and wellness classes and becoming fascinated with health and healing the body naturally.
The amazing and rewarding shift in my health over the last two decades has led me on this path to educating and empowering others to live their most optimal life.
In 2011, I became a Certified Holistic Health Coach and a proud member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. I studied at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition where I was taught by some of the world’s leading holistic experts. My training covered the study of over 100 dietary theories, including raw foods, veganism and Paleo, as well as practical lifestyle management techniques and innovative coaching methods.
My instructors were some of the world’s top health and wellness experts, such as, Dr. Andrew Weil, Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, Dr. Deepak Chopra, leader in the field of mind-body medicine, Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center, Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of Nutrition at Harvard University, Geneen Roth, bestselling author and expert on emotional eating, among many others.
This expert training that I received strengthened my belief that not every diet or way of eating works for everybody, because each of us is a unique being and needs an individualized approach to health and wellness. One size does not fit all. It also reinforced my principle that eating any diet that is rich in whole foods is the key to long-lasting health, energy, and wellness.
My education has equipped me with extensive cutting-edge knowledge in holistic nutrition, health coaching, and preventative health.
I consider myself an example of someone who embraced the healing power of foods and came to understand the importance of a holistic approach to life. I have experienced a renewed energy, better sleep rhythms, better focus and a new pep in my step. Today, I look at life with a deeper appreciation for how food affects the body, mind and soul and I’m inspired to share my knowledge.
As a health coach I educate and empower others to eat mindfully while advocating whole, pure and non-toxic ways of living. Focus is maintained on the ultimate goal of helping individuals reach their own ideal optimal health.
I also facilitate an array of wellness workshops for corporations and local venues on a variety of health related topics. (see “Events” tab for further details)
